In the lush and lively landscapes of the Galápagos Islands, where every creature tells a story of evolution and survival, French photographer Pierre Escoubas embarked on a remarkable journey. Armed with the Irix 150mm f/2.8 macro lens, Pierre set out to document the intricate and often overlooked details of the island´s unique fauna. This post explores his work, capturing the essence of the Galápagos through the lens of macro photography. While he was there, he worked alongside a team from San Francisco State University, documenting their research on the genetic biodiversity of Darwin’s finches and other local fauna.

Unparalleled Clarity and Precision

The Irix 150mm f/2.8's razor-sharp focus and superior image quality allow photographers to capture intricate patterns and textures. Its shallow depth of field at f/2.8 creates a beautiful background blur (bokeh), making the subject stand out with striking clarity.

A word from the Photographer

I chose to bring the Irix 150mm Dragonfly macro lens to the Galapagos for several reasons. My assignment required featuring some of the smaller local fauna in the planned video, as well as close-up shots in the laboratory. Since I almost exclusively use the 150mm Dragonfly for such tasks, I knew its versatility would be essential. I also anticipated that it might come in handy for capturing images of the invertebrate fauna. However, what I hadn't expected was the wide range of images I could capture with this lens. From sea lions and giant tortoises to birds and tiny spiders, the array of subjects I was able to photograph in the Galapagos with this lens was both spectacular and surprising. Given that the fauna there is not shy of humans, the 150mm macro lens proved to be an indispensable tool, even allowing me to take close-up portraits of sea iguanas on the beach!

To me, the 150mm Dragonfly is more than just a macro lens; it's a Swiss Army knife for photography and videography.
